about

Slow Teeth Portland, Oregon

Slow Teeth is an anarcha-herbalist quintet from Portland Oregon formed in January, 2009. We play vocally oriented, often choral, usually apocalyptic punky folk music with shades of goth-western, vaudevillian and string band arrangements. Each member plays multiple instruments and writes songs, taking it in turn to sing lead and switching instruments between songs. ... more

Track Name: Lightnin' Proof
Gotta get me out
Gonna sing and shout
Something's calling me
Out into the trees
Some million mice
Scared of snow and ice
Ask the doug fir tree
Won't you shelter me?
See their tails sticking out from the cones
Like faces in apartment windows
Lit up in the light of the TV
That tells you the world has gone crazy.
There's 500 cars stuck in Chicago
You can't move them they are buried in snow.
Tens of thousands of people in Cairo,
you can't move them their not gonna go home.

Little mouse I'm just like you I wanna hide in the trees where the storm can't get to, cuz I ain't lightnin' or bullet proof, I need something strong and beautiful to turn to.

Gotta get me out
Gonna sing and shout
Gonna run and yell
Gonna see and smell
All that mountain land
Gonna clap my hands
To each little mouse
I'll say "come out, come out."

Millions of fish washed up in LA
Why? Nobody knows how to explain.
9.0 quake in the Pacific.
End times, they get less and less cryptic.

Little mouse I'm just like you I wanna hide in the trees where the storm can't get to, cuz I ain't lightnin' or bullet proof, I need something strong and beautiful to turn to.
Track Name: Carry You Home
There's no money left to pay the rent,
There's no money left to pay the rent again.
And they'll give you just the rope enough to hang yourself and leave you there, drifting in the wind.

They'll push you from the desert like they pushed us past the sea.
They'll push until they break your back and knock you to your knees.
And their moneyed hands will never have to answer for their wicked plans,
not while they still hold the deed.

They call it debt but we all know that this is slavery.

The hardest work, the best made plans, are laid to waste by whims of evil men.
The bills they send are printed red, you can't make the rent, they're taking everything.
But you worked your whole life to build this home and they can take it away with just the flick of a pen.
But they set the stage, you just played your part, and now they want the keys, they're showing you to the door.

When your time comes I will carry you home.
Golden sunsets, strings and trumpets sing your welcome home.
Desert flowers, wild horses, juniper trees are calling,
"When your time come I will carry you home."

Yeah, they may hold the deed, but our roots dug deep in this arrid soil, in this desert keep.
For years we ran through the sage and the sand with reckless hearts and lofty plans.
This desert's grace is etched in your face and they may own the land, but we belong to this place.

When your time comes I will carry you home.
Golden sunsets, strings and trumpets sing your welcome home.
Desert flowers, wild horses, juniper trees are calling,
"When your time come I will carry you home."
Track Name: Streetlights
"The body is willing, the spirit is weak."
I think to myself as we walk up the street.
We speak not a word, it's gettin' dark.
The power lines pulse, streetlights seem to spark.
But, the spark is dim and the road before me consists of gray shapes shifting uneasily.
If I make it back, I won't leave next time.
A promise made blindly. Is there any other kind?

My conviction is dim as you stand before me.
I don't know what to hope for, I just know what I see,
and if I make it out I won't come back again,
cuz I'll never forget everything that happened.
Track Name: The World Is Clearly Ending
In june the rain did pour and pour
And all the summer hearts were torn
But what were we expecting when the world is clearly ending

Musings under streetlamp light
Fit of kisses on the porch sleep deprived
We float along the currents of nostalgia

But we can’t stay here
Breathing in the stale air and choking on
Our longings and loathing and you forgot something in the Midwest

If I don’t go out there
Where will I be next year but listlessly listening
For the sound of your sweet deceit in my ear

Smoke sunshine through the teeth
Thick black grease stains my speech
A key I made you of lace and glue
Though bare bones shone and feathers flew
How dull they grew how dull they grew

Seaweed hangs from the trees
To the bark barnicles cling

Dear pacific swollow me whole
To your shores I crawl back alone
And this cool breeze carries me away from you

Whatever you say your hands speak more truth
The blackest crow has turned to white
In it’s flight between our lives
Track Name: Planned Obsolescence
We sure done did it now,
The future’s here.
We’re sprouting wires now,
And the path is clear.
Our bodies obsolete now,
Like the human race.
We’re endless numbers now
In endless space.
A brand new interface!
A brand new human race!
A whole new sense of place!
A whole new goddamn human race!

Welcome to the future kid,
You never stood a chance.
Welcome to the future kid.

They got a pill to save your soul, now ain’t that sweet?
They wrote a code to fill that hole in your heart!
They got a war to save the world, come and pull up a seat!
They got a plan for you, you’ll see, this is just the start!

There’s no time to feel let down, the future’s here.

They’re packing slaves away in distant factories and prisons,
to make machines to do the things we thought gave our lives meaning.
Our dreams (as obsolete and distant as the world that dreamed them) can’t slow us down, ain’t we proud, science is the new religion!
A brand new interface!
A brand new human race!
A whole new sense of place!
A whole new goddamn human race!

They got a pill to save your soul, now ain’t that sweet?
They wrote a code to fill that hole in your heart!
They got a war to save the world, come and pull up a seat!
They got a plan for you, you’ll see, this is just the start!
They know you’re fucked up and alone and they got a cure!
They know exactly what you need, gonna sell it to you!
They know I’m fucked up and alone and they got a cure!
They know exactly what I need, gonna sell it to me!

There's no time to feel let down, the future's here.

Track Name: Pride is a Chariot
You got a spirit that wants to give in, fully surrender, but still hold up your chin. I got a nature that understands the need to improvise when you shoulda been makin’ plans.
But I wasn’t calling you an idiot, can’t you see my spirit hitchhiking down the street from it’s busted chariot?
No one could build a temple in which they could hide from decay,
And no one stops for broken spirits in this day and age.

Swing low, swing so low.

The only romance I know is under the canopy, where I learned something from the alder tree. Like, how the wind seduces them right out of their seeds and the big ones watch the little ones come up in the shade by the stream.
The hottest I get is a smoky fire and it’s a busted-chariot, wood-burned pile.
With the oak and the alder and the firgotten dreams. And the cedar needle crackling to tell me a consoling story.

Swing low, swing so low.

Come here and look directly into my eyes.
I wouldn’t do you like that, I couldn’t if I tried.
I look in yours and you’re a hundred million miles away.
High in pride’s chariot, the wood will burn in regret’s flames.
